SA: SA speaker stands his ground

South Australia's parliamentary speaker, PETER LEWIS, has rejected Liberal Party callsto stand aside while police investigate his business dealings with a convicted armed robber.

The idependent MP has confirmed the police are inquiring into his dealings with TERRYSTEPHENS, but has denied any wrongdoing.

Mr LEWIS says he cut all ties with Mr STEPHENS once he found out the extent of theman's prior offences.

Mr STEPHENS has alleged that Mr LEWIS took possession of about 200 antique and valuableguns when he bought the home and assets of former magistrate and convicted paedophilePETER LIDDY -- which Mr LEWIS has denied.

So far, the South Australian Labor government, which managed to take office this yearwith the support of Mr LEWIS, has declined to comment on the allegations.

But yesterday the Liberal Opposition called on Mr LEWIS to stand aside while the inquiriescontinued because of a conflict of interest.
