NSW: Govt must tighten laws protecting workers entitlements
ACTU president JENNIE GEORGE says a Sydney grandmother who was cheated out of $12,000
in long service leave highlights the urgent need for laws protecting workers' entitlements.
Ms GEORGE says the federal government faces a massive worker backlash if it doesn't
implement laws protecting entitlements.
Yesterday, the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union staged a sit-in at a
Sydney furniture factory over claims the owner, JIM MCCANN, owed 62-year-old former employee
HEATHER TUBBY $12,000.
Ms GEORGE says it's a disgrace a grandmother has been cheated out of her entitlements.
Mr MCCANN has denied he legally or morally owes his former worker the funds and has
accused the CFMEU of trying to out-muscle him.
Supporters plan to rally inside the Harvey Norman store at the Moore Park SupaCenta tonight.
Ms GEORGE says the union movement's putting Workplace Relations Minister PETER REITH on notice.
She says he's running out of time to implement the new laws, which were promised after
120 miners from the Oakdale colliery lost $6.3 million when they were retrenched earlier
this year.
