SHOP online and get things at rock-bottom prices, writes IZWAN ISMAIL.
When Jan Croeni came visiting a few years back, he saw a culture that was synonymous with all the races here - shopping.
That prompted him to set up a business that can further fuel the shopping culture among the people.
"What I saw as I walked around Kuala Lumpur were sales everywhere. The situation is also the same in Singapore," he says.
"From there, I was convinced that the business I was about to start had a lot of potential," he adds.
It was an online coupon deal, a new shopping concept that enabled people to buy things and services in advance at a much lower price. After a thorough study, he and his partner established myDeal.com.my with a US$3.5 million (RM10.57 million) capital in an office in Jalan Ampang in June 2010.
"Although some were still sceptical about spending online in the beginning, the mentality had somehow changed when they realised that it was safe to do so," says Croeni. The fact that online business models like AirAsia, Amazon and cinemas have been very successful here further convinced Croeni about the willingness to shop online.
"I realised it was vital that people had 100 per cent trust in the security of the business. So we worked together with iPay88, an online payment gateway used by many online business here. It's a credible gateway in Malaysia," he says.
A month prior to that, Croeni and his partner had also established a similar set-up in Singapore.
Online coupons
While Online coupons may be new here, Croeni says the concept started way back in 2000 in the US, but it did not take off.
"The idea was good at that time, but there wasn't enough mechanism to support this business model at that time," he says, pointing to the role of social networking today.
"No doubt social networking websites like Facebook are the main drivers of this business model, as shopping and buying things online is all about social life where people talk about it," he says.
This is true as today, 75 per cent of myDeal.com.my coupon advertisements are on Facebook and the rest can be seen on search engines like Google and Yahoo!.
"2008 was the year where this business model was given a new life and several companies in the US paved the way successfully. In 2009, the concept became big in Europe and in 2010, we brought it to Southeast Asia," says Croeni.
How it works
As one surfs the Internet, using Facebook for instance, he or she will see a myDeal ad popping up at one section of the webpage or he or she can go to myDeals.com.my to look for deals there.
When a person buys the deal, he or she will get the coupon via email and print it. Then he or she will go to the restaurant, shop or whatever the coupon is for to redeem, which can last up to six months.
"To date, we have 500 merchants offering deal under myDeal.com.my, all in Malaysia. We have locations in Penang, Johor Baru, and will be opening in Kota Kinabalu soon," he says.
Croeni says myDeals offers coupons based on locations. "If you visit myDeals you can choose the locations on the deals that you want to purchase. Prior to going to a certain place, you can check the deals there and make a purchase at a cheaper price," he says.
"If a person wants to go to a restaurant for a fantastic meal at RM50, he may want to visit myDeal. The same deal may be 50 per cent off the price." he adds.
The discounts myDeal offers are not just from restaurants, but also spas, sport activities like paintball, etc.
"So far, we don't offer deals on gadgets yet as the prices are normally controlled," says Croeni.
"The advantage for the vendors is that they get free promotions on our websites. The commission is 100 per cent performance-based where only when we managed to sell, we'll get the commission," he adds.
Future
To date, myDeal.com.my has 200,000 users. "When we started, we only sold 500 coupons a month but now it's about 80,000," says Croeni.
His aim is for myDeals to provide coupon deals for every town in Malaysia in five years' time.
"We also hope to offer more deal categories, including gadgets and luxury deals. We also want to be a brand renowned in Malaysia when it comes to online coupons, "says Croeni.

FED:PM calls for respect in marriage debate =7
Mr de Bruyn warned that changing the Marriage Act could cost Labor votes at the next
federal election.
Senator John Faulkner then rose to speak in support of the Barr-Wong amendment to change
the party platform on same-sex marriage.
"Human rights can never be at the mercy of individual opinions or individual prejudices,"
he said.
"They are not privileges to be extended to one person and denied to another according
to the whims of popular opinion or the whims of the government of the day.
"They are inherent in each and every one of us simply because we are human.
"It is not for governments to grant many rights but to recognise and protect them."
Senator Faulkner also spoke against a conscience vote for MPs.

QLD:Report shows Qld's solar potential
BRISBANE, Dec 8 AAP - Large-scale solar precincts could be built in Queensland after
a study found the state has some of the best conditions for such projects.
A pre-feasibility report commissioned by the state government and the Clinton Climate
Initiative has examined the opportunities for solar plants in Queensland, finding the
state had better sunshine than places where such projects already exist.
Other key findings were that large-scale solar projects would be technically and environmentally
feasible, particularly if constructed in a "precinct" to share infrastructure costs like
transmission and expedite the approvals process.
It said combining solar power with other energy sources such as existing fossil fuel
generation might assist the economics of deploying commercial-scale, solar power technology.
Premier Anna Bligh said the report showed the quality of Queensland's solar resource
was superior to regions like Nevada in the US and Granada in Spain where large-scale solar
generation already occurred.
"These two locations are well known as current world leaders in solar thermal development
and we now know Queensland can match them," she said.
Ms Bligh said the report had given a better understanding of what it would take for
such projects in solar-rich regions, including central and northwest Queensland and the
Surat Basin, as the state strove for a cleaner energy future.
"This information will assist industry in determining locations that might best suit
their solar solutions and investment aspirations," she said.
But opposition energy spokesman Jeff Seeney said the government was "embracing the
silly season" by announcing Queensland was blessed with sunshine.
He said Labor's solar policies were about generating "feel good headlines", not about
acting to develop sustainable electricity.

VIC:'Disturbing' leadership failures in Rees
By Steve Lillebuen
MELBOURNE, Aug 1 AAP - Victoria's former fire chief Russell Rees used a "disturbing"
leadership style to deflect his responsibilities during Black Saturday, the final report
into the disaster says.
Mr Rees, who resigned as head of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) in June, failed to
oversee fire warnings, create state-wide fire plans and maintain contact with what the
report calls "poorly equipped" incident control centres.
During his three appearances before the commission, Mr Rees said he risked "losing
focus" if he had bothered calling his staff at the helm of the busy centres.
"He, therefore, remained operationally removed from the fires and as a result, was
not in a position to appreciate the deficiencies in the staffing and expertise of some
incident management teams," the report says.
But Mr Rees shares the blame for failing to act with the other emergency services leaders
in charge on February 7, 2009.
All leaders had a tendency to delegate their responsibilities to subordinates, which
the report called "ineffective".
"The commission observed a disturbing tendency among senior fire agency personnel -
including the chief officers - to consistently allocate responsibility further down the
chain of command," the report by the Bushfires Royal Commission concludes.
"Accountability must rest ultimately at the top of the chain of command."
Both Mr Rees and Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) fire chief Ewan
Waller had not directly controlled the response to the fires as they should have.
"The commission concludes that CFA Chief Officer Mr Rees and DSE (Department Sustainability
and Environment) Chief Fire Officer Mr Waller should have done more."
Mr Rees did not make any comment on the report and is believed to be in NSW, camping
with his family.
"The issues we are dealing with here are bigger than people," CFA chief executive Mick
Bourke told reporters on Saturday.
"Russell Rees was the chief officer, but he is no longer."
On Sunday, Premier John Brumby gave his full support for Mr Waller and other emergency
service heads criticised in the report, but appeared to stop short of endorsing Mr Rees.
"Russell has of course departed so Russell is a private citizen and he is no longer
a member of the CFA and any comments Russell might like to make, Russell could make."

NSW: Sydney roads running smoothly despite bus strike
SYDNEY, Dec 18 AAP - Despite hundreds of thousands of commuters having to find alternative
means of transport due to striking bus drivers, Sydney's roads continue to run "smoothly",
authorities say.
Bus drivers in Sydney and Newcastle began a 24-hour strike at 4am (AEDT) on Friday,
following demands from the Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) for a pay rise without loss
of conditions.
Well into the morning peak period, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Transport's Transport
Coordination Group said "there were no real problems".
"All is running quite smoothly," the spokeswoman told AAP about 8.30am (AEDT) Friday.
"Traffic on the (Sydney Harbour) bridge is heavy but that's normal and if anything,
it's even a bit lighter than usual for a Friday."
The spokeswoman reminded commuters that parking was available at Moore Park and free
shuttle services would run from there to Central station during the morning and afternoon
peak periods.
State Transit bus tickets will be recognised on CityRail train services and Sydney
Ferries during the strike and drivers will be allowed to use bus lanes.
In the lead-up to the morning peak, the NSW Taxi Council called for patience as many
of the 600,000 effected commuters were expected to turn to taxis to get to and from work
and school.
"We have every available car on the road and will work to get as many people as possible
to work on time - but passengers should remember the bus strike is not our fault, the
resulting traffic jams which slow us down are not our fault, and there are hundreds of
thousands of people trying to get to the office by 9am," council CEO Howard Harrison said
in a statement.
Bus drivers have met to consider a government offer of wage increases of three per
cent backdated from June 12 this year, and a further three per cent from June 12 next
year.
An Industrial Relations Commission conference has been scheduled for noon (AEDT) on Friday.

Fed: Frontbencher takes aim at outspoken coalition colleagues
CANBERRA, Aug 10 AAP - A senior Liberal frontbencher has taken aim at some of his coalition
colleagues accusing them of vanity by speaking out against Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull
and emissions trading.
The opposition's attorney-general spokesman George Brandis specifically mentioned outspoken
Liberal backbencher Wilson Tuckey, who has vowed to confront Mr Turnbull at a meeting
of the parliamentary party on Tuesday.
Mr Tuckey described his leader as "arrogant and inexperienced" in an email distributed
to party colleagues.
Mr Turnbull is also facing dissent on the coalition's stance on emissions trading and
a permanent tax hike on alcopops from the Nationals Senate leader Barnaby Joyce.
Mr Brandis said the dissidents were risking the chances of Liberal MPs and party candidates
in marginal seats.
"There are one or two individuals, like Wilson Tuckey, who ... out of vanity ... express
in public views they have every opportunity to express within the private forum of the
Liberal party," he told ABC Radio on Monday.
The most outspoken members were those who held safe seats - such as Mr Tuckey - or
who held a safe position on Senate tickets, he said.

NSW: Great white shark numbers could be on rise
By Kim Christian
SYDNEY, Feb 15 AAP - Great white shark numbers could be on the rise, but there's no
evidence to suggest bull shark numbers around Sydney have increased, authorities say.
The analysis comes in the wake of two shark attacks and amid speculation they could
be linked to a growth in shark numbers as a result of shark fishing bans.
A navy diver and a surfer are recovering in hospital from separate shark attacks in
Sydney Harbour and Bondi Beach last week. A bull shark was believed to be responsible
the attack in Sydney harbour.
In the same week, shark fishermen reached their yearly limit of 60,000 tonnes due to
new fishing quotas imposed by the state government which run until July.
NSW Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Ian Macdonald refused to lift a ban on
shark fishing quotas on Sunday, dismissing suggestions there was a link between the attacks
and the government's quotas.
"Any connection between the attacks last week in Sydney Harbour (and at Bondi Beach)
and the quotas for the shark catching industry in NSW is completely erroneous. It is a
lie, it's false and it's mischievous and misleading," Mr Macdonald told reporters.
"The plain fact of the matter is the quotas of 60 tonnes per annum ... is set scientifically."
The NSW Fisheries chief scientist Steve Keneally said about five per cent of dangerous
sharks were caught as part of the quota, but there was no evidence to show that bull shark
numbers had grown.
"I think that we've probably reached a point where we'll get the odd attack every now
and again, which is what we're seeing these days," Mr Keneally told reporters.
"Once every few years we might see an attack like we have seen recently, but there's
no thought that we're suddenly going to get more attacks in Sydney Harbour or anywhere
off our coast."
He said warmer water temperature at this time of the year was a big factor, with baitfish,
tailor and kingfish attracting sharks.
"The numbers haven't gone up, but there's some small evidence to suggest that white
pointer sharks are starting to increase after protection internationally of them about
10 or 12 years ago."
Mr Macdonald said the government would not review shark fishing quotas unless the science
directed them to do so.
"These incidents are more related to the fact that Sydney Harbour now has much larger
volumes of fish, and therefore shark, due to the ban on commercial fishing."
However, he said a review of the state's shark meshing program was underway.
Environmentalist and Clean Up Australia founder Ian Kiernan said fish numbers were
increasing with the ban on fishing in Sydney Harbour.
"Sharks have always been here, you've only got to go back to the Aboriginal history
of the colony," Mr Kiernan said.
"It is their territory."

Fed: Ageing not as sexy but more critical than climate change
CANBERRA, Aug 27 AAP - It's not as sexy as climate change, but Australia's seniors
reckon addressing the issue of the country's ageing population is more critical than the
state of the environment.
Australia's largest organisation for the over 50s, National Seniors Australia, has
launched a document highlighting what it describes as a crisis in ageing that has the
ability to bankrupt the nation.
By 2030 more than half the voting population of Australia will be over 50 years of
age, the group says.
The document, which will be sent to all MPs and had been discussed with Treasurer Wayne
Swan, showed how ageing could be turned into an asset rather than a liability, National
Seniors Australia chairman Everald Compton said.
"This issue of the ageing of Australia and the cost of the ageing of Australia is a
greater crisis than climate change, but it's not as sexy a subject as climate change and
most people in Australia would prefer not to grow old and die," Mr Compton told reporters.
"We're calling on the government and the opposition to give this the priority in a
bipartisan way which will enable Australia to avoid going bankrupt with the issue of a
massively ageing population."
Australia was wasting the talent of millions of older people, Mr Compton said.
"We pension them off and tell them to sit in front of their television set and watch
Home and Away while the nation goes to the pot economically.
"This nation has to face the fact that we cannot economically sustain a retirement age of 65."
Mr Compton, 76, who says he intends to die by being shot by a jealous husband when
he is 120, would not suggest a suitable retirement age.
"I belive the longer you work, the longer you live. The quicker that you retire, the
quicker you get into a geriatric hospital."

Qld: Form new conservative party - Seeney = 2
Federal Liberal leader Brendan Nelson had been involved in the discussions "in an indirect
way", Mr Seeney said.
A new conservative party should create its own identity and scrap the Liberal and National
names, he said.
"I believe that it has to be a new party with a new identity, and not an amalgamation
of the two old ones," Mr Seeney said.
"As part of making that new party the new identity has to include a new name."
The two parties would need to come to an agreement on a merger or new party by the
middle of next year, Mr Seeney said, or instead focus on working together as a coalition
both federally and in the states.
"The indications are we would be looking for a result by the middle of next year. It
can't go on forever."
Mr Seeney also said he would put himself forward for the leadership of a new conservative
party in Queensland.
"I believe that the new party should elect its own leader, whether that's me or somebody
else would be up to the people who constitute that new party," he said.

"The focus of the inquiry is to ascertain how and why the baby was left in the garage.
"I'm led to believe it was lucky the baby was found when it was or he may not have

ANZ sells interest in struggling dot com.
Oct 3, 2001 (The Sydney Morning Herald
ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australia's ANZ Bank has sold its 12% interest in struggling "dotcom", MultiEmedia. At the same time, ANZ renegotiated a penalty payment arrangement, ending the much-touted partnership between the two companies. ANZ has lent MultiEmedia $A3m on commercial terms instead of the $A3.6m it would have been required to pay over two years as part of the partnership arrangement. The decision to exit comes as MultiEmedia struggles to recover from the $A28m net loss incurred in the year to June 2001 and a qualification by auditors about its ability to continue as a going concern. MultiEmedia shares closed at $A0.018 on 2 October 2001 on the Australian Stock Exchange.
