NSW: Aged care plan for run down country hospitals

A six-month inquiry into the state of rural health has found the majority of country
hospitals are verging on defacto nursing homes.

The report urges the State Government to spend $45 million in maintaining and developing
rural hospitals and converting some into permanent aged care facilities.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports the inquiry has found 100 towns with a population
of 5,000 or less have a hospital verging on defacto nursing home status.
