Qld: Form new conservative party - Seeney = 2
Federal Liberal leader Brendan Nelson had been involved in the discussions "in an indirect
way", Mr Seeney said.
A new conservative party should create its own identity and scrap the Liberal and National
names, he said.
"I believe that it has to be a new party with a new identity, and not an amalgamation
of the two old ones," Mr Seeney said.
"As part of making that new party the new identity has to include a new name."
The two parties would need to come to an agreement on a merger or new party by the
middle of next year, Mr Seeney said, or instead focus on working together as a coalition
both federally and in the states.
"The indications are we would be looking for a result by the middle of next year. It
can't go on forever."
Mr Seeney also said he would put himself forward for the leadership of a new conservative
party in Queensland.
"I believe that the new party should elect its own leader, whether that's me or somebody
else would be up to the people who constitute that new party," he said.
