FED:PM calls for respect in marriage debate =7
Mr de Bruyn warned that changing the Marriage Act could cost Labor votes at the next
federal election.
Senator John Faulkner then rose to speak in support of the Barr-Wong amendment to change
the party platform on same-sex marriage.
"Human rights can never be at the mercy of individual opinions or individual prejudices,"
he said.
"They are not privileges to be extended to one person and denied to another according
to the whims of popular opinion or the whims of the government of the day.
"They are inherent in each and every one of us simply because we are human.
"It is not for governments to grant many rights but to recognise and protect them."
Senator Faulkner also spoke against a conscience vote for MPs.
